Happy Holidays!

As the year is coming to a close, I'd like to wish all of you happy holidays! Hopefully you'll find the break from school restful and get some good training in.

The first race is coming up fast in January!

2014 Road Schedule

I'm very excited to announce our 2014 road schedule!

Calendar is as follows for 2014:
1/25: Bike Haus Crit (Chandler, AZ)
1/26: Race Against Time: ITT and TTT (Pinal, AZ)
2/1: UA Crit (Tucson, AZ)
2/2: UA Road Race (Oracle, AZ)
2/15: ASU Crit (Tempe)
2/16: McDowell Mountain Circuit (Phoenix)
3/8-9: Trifecta Omnium (Las Cruces, NM): Regionals Road Race
3/29-30: AZ State Crit Champs (Saturday is the SWCCC champs)
4/5-6: Adoption Exchange Classic (ABQ, NM) Conference meeting Saturday night

The calendar page will be updated as fliers become available.

New for this year:
-Each weekend has at least 2 races. Now the drives are worth it!
-Entry fees should be $15 (waiting on confirmation from one other race on this)
-Each rider will have ONE number for ALL collegiate races ALL SEASON LONG. You'll get a new one when you upgrade or pay for one if you lose it. This will make updating points for me much, much easier
-Crits and circuit races will have separate fields for Men's A, Men's B, Men's C, and Women's A/B. No more Men's A/B/C crits! There will be a gap between women's A and women's B fields (like 10 seconds). Road races are still combined with non-collegiate fields.

For 2015....I'd like to strike more of a balance between NM and AZ driving. Right now NM schools have to drive to us 4 weekends. Not sure how to tackle this one unless Silver City, NM wants to host collegiate races...

Cyclocross!

Our 2013 CX season kicked off in Albuquerque, NM at the DASH- Night Cross race. NMSU is on the board early in the season- nice work guys!

Up next is a double header in Tucson, Arizona. Pre-registration is picking up steam and there should be a good turnout of collegiate riders. UA's race will be the only event which has the collegiate riders race separately- don't miss it! Check the schedule page for more details.

Regionals at University of Arizona

The UA shoe-stringed together a race weekend in the face of a government shutdown. The weekend featured a cross country as well as the conference's only short track and team relay events.

Saturday:
The cross country race started off with cool temperatures and calm wind. However, as racers were on course the wind picked up and knocked down several course markings. Sadly a few riders were lead astray after the second check point, making it back to the finish area a little later than expected. The race was called at the second check point for the Men's A because of these issues. David Carlson (UA) extended his winning streak and took over the teal leader's jersey from Alex Winkler (NAU) who finished third. Douglas Torres (UNM) finished 2nd. The women's A was a tie between Amy Chandos and Lindsey Dye (both NAU), with Amy just edging out Lindsey. The Men's B and C categories were dominated by NAU with Scott Marshall and Nathan Franklin winning their categories respectively.

Sunday:
A little further down the trail the UA club had marked a challenging 1 mile STXC race (which would also be used for the relay loop). The Men's A went first and after a flurry of attacks a lead group of 2: David Carlson and Douglas Torres established themselves out front. By the 3rd lap of 6, Douglas and pulled away slightly from Carlson. Over the laps Torres grew his lead to over a minute by the finish. Behind Carlson, Quinn Keogh (UA) was working to bridge up to his teammate, while further back Andrew Keller (UA) was regretting his early attacks and attempted to hold off Winkler (NAU). In the end, Torres won the day, followed by Carlson, Keogh, Winkler, and Keller.

In the Women's A/B race, Amy Chandos was given a big gap over her teammate as Dye experience a small mechanical. However, Dye was able to rejoin her teammate and once again celebrate hand in hand for another podium sweep. Liz Schmitt (UA) was the sole Women's B rider.

The Men's B/C field has 2 Men's B and 1 C rider, both events were won by NAU with Braden Flannery taking the win in the B's and Chris Leffler in the C's.

The team relay took place on the same course with each rider completing one lap. NAU consisted of Alex, Amy, Lindsey, and Braden and UA had David, Quinn, Liz, and Florian. After the first lap, with Florian and Amy, the race was neck and neck. However, David gave UA a massive lead going into the 3rd lap. Liz took over for UA and 40 seconds later Lindsey was on the course for NAU. Lindsey put the hammer down and gave Alex a large gap to work with for the final lap. UA's Quinn Keogh had his work cut out for him and came in 30 seconds behind Alex.

At the end of the day, NAU extended their lead in the Team competition over UA by 1,300 points. However, David Carlson overtook Alex for the men's A individual competition. One race remains in the season: NAU Super D. Will Alex retake his lead? Can David defend it with a race not suited for him? Or will Douglas Torres, the dark horse in 3rd, claim a surprise upset? We'll know after next Saturday!

High Desert Screamer

The season continued last weekend with a XC and TT race in Gallup, NM. Saturday's XC race featured rolling single track along Gallup's famous High Desert trail. The Men's A field went first for 30 miles and was won by the unstoppable David Carlson (UA), in 2nd was NAU's Kyle Gandy, and 3rd Alex Winkler (NAU). David clawed back a few more points on Winkler and closed the gap to 15 for the leader's jersey! The Women's A field was won by NAU's Lindsey Dye, who finally broke the 3-way tie in the individual omniumn. 2nd place was her teammate Amy Chandos.

In the lower categories, NAU ran the show! With all 5 Men's B riders and all 3 Men's C riders, the school was guaranteed max points for the weekend. NAU's Makenzie Wright also won the women's B race over UA's Leslie Sullivan. Kudos to NAU on bringing the largest team each weekend- keep up the solid recruiting!

Sunday's TT was an interesting event held on Gallup's new Brickyard Bike Park. Yet again, David Carlson (UA) laid down the fastest time of the day over a tie for second between Alex Winkler (NAU) and Douglas Torres (UNM). Winkler needed to finish no less than 2nd to defend his jersey and he delivered the goods, clinging on to a slim 5 point lead. NAU swept the women's podium with Lindsey and Amy going 1-2 again. As it was on Saturday, NAU dominated the lower categories on Sunday taking maximum points.

NAU holds the lead in both the men's and women's individual omnium and the Div 1 team omnium...but will they keep UA at bay? Only two weekends of racing remain!

NMSU (Horny Toad Hustle)

Thanks for a great race NMSU and the promoters of HTH! From what I heard the event went well!

Things have tightened up in the race for the individual omnium.... we have a 3 way tie in the women's A! In the men's A, Alex hung on to his green jersey despite suffering from a mechanical. UA's David Carlson pulled out another victory and has started to close the gap to NAU's Winkler. UNM's Douglas Torres isn't far behind Carlson in 3rd.

In the team omnium, NAU padded its lead over UNM and UA, and now commands a 300 point lead over both schools. However, the difference between 2nd and 3rd is much tighter at only 5 points! In the Division 2 standings, NMSU is on the board and in the lead!

The battle for the team omnium and the green individual jersey continues next week in Gallup with an XC and exciting TT!

UNM Recap

First- GREAT work hosting a full weekend of events UNM! The XC and DH courses were not only gorgeous but very challenging.

Results are posted under the Schedule Page.

We have an early lead from NAU in the team and Men's A omnium.... will Alex Winkler be able to defend his lead for the season? In the Women's A omnium there is a tie between UNM rider's Anona Whitley and Terah Blake. The action continues this weekend in Las Cruces and the Horny Toad Hustle- it'll be interesting to see how the rankings change!

Sedona!

The conference gathered in Sedona, AZ this past weekend for some riding, bonding, and to discuss the future direction of the conference.

Besides some epic riding- both in terms of terrain and weather- the schools were brought closer together over the course of the weekend. Everyone has a strong passion for collegiate cycling and desire to see the conference grow and improve. It was inspiring to say the least!

Two scheduling changes

There as been two changes to the upcoming fall schedules:

For Mountain:
The High Desert Screamer has moved up a week to Sept 21. Good news for those of you wanting to race the AZ State Hill Climb on the 29th. The flier has not been updated on USA Cycling so I will wait until that is done to place it on the website.

For CX:
The NMSU CX race has moved to Nov 23/24. I realize this overlaps with El Tour, however, somethings are unavoidable. Regionals is also this weekend with medals and trophies awarded on Sunday.

Hopefully a good majority of people will be able to attend our conference retreat over Labor Day Weekend (look on the Facebook page for more info). Besides riding we will be discussing some heavy topics for the conference to consider such as:
-Spring scheduling
-Race organization
-Fees
-Officials
-Fostering the collegiate atmosphere

And other topics.

NAU 12 Hour race- CANCELED

Sadly due to unforeseen circumstances the 12 Hr race at NAU has been canceled. The schedule has been updated to reflect the change. The season opener is now at UNM and the Back 2 School Special.

If you or your team has registered for the event, please contact the promoter to work out a refund.

Cyclocross!

Its getting time to plan out our cyclocross season. Mountain bike nationals are on Oct 25-27 and CX nationals are on Jan. 8-12, 2014 in Boulder. With that in mind, I'd like to have our season start on Nov 2 and 3 and end by Dec 7 and 8. This will give riders time to recover from mountain bike nationals and be able to prepare for finals in December.

Events do not need to be stand alone collegiate races, in fact I would encourage against such planning. I encourage promoters to offer a full run of USAC categories in addition to collegiate- which for this season can be condensed down to Women and Men categories, we will score the categories separately. Feel free to work with area promoters in adding collegiate races to theirs. As CX grows in our conference we will explore hosting collegiate only events.  If your team is interested in hosting a CX race, please let me know and give me a brief run down of your event plan.

Conference Goals

The last few days, I've been mulling over a couple of ideas and the one I came back to a few times was establishing conference goals (both for myself and for the conference). I think conference wide goals will help us stay motivated and grow the conference a bit.
1.) Increase communication between myself and our schools. I don't want people thinking I'm unapproachable or too busy to chat. My door (if you live in Tucson) is always open...so is my e-mail and phone too. I'm always happy to discuss cycling!
2.) Increase communication between schools. We have a lot *A LOT* of quality leadership in the conference and new schools and officers can learn from the experienced leaders. That was one of the goals of the FB group and I think its worked out well so far.
3.) Grow the conference. We're missing a large contingent of riders from New Mexico such as in Silver City (Western NM) and in El Paso (UTEP). I would love to see these programs start up and help diversify the conference. The only way to do this is to spread the word about collegiate cycling. If you know someone attending these schools and they have the tiniest love of biking- talk to them about starting a club!
4.) Re-establish ourselves on the national scene. Our conference has great potential and has the perfect mix to turn out championship riders with the terrain and weather. I would like to see mountain and road national titles return to our conference in the next 3 years. Obviously, the sooner the better, however, it takes time to develop national caliber riders. I would include track and CX in this but those are definitely segments that need a lot of growth and one needs a dedicated structure in our boundaries...
5.) Increase the number of stand alone collegiate events over the next couple of years. This one is tied to number 3 since our conference is too small to effectively have races focusing only on collegiate. One of the best things about collegiate cycling is the atmosphere which I feel is sort of missing in our conference. Anyone who attended nationals in May picked up on the collegiate vibe and that is exactly how collegiate focused weekends feel. The current status works, however,  with more schools we can start to shy away from tagging our events on to other USAC events and instead tagging on a few USAC categories to collegiate races. Imagine having 6 collegiate races (Men's A through D, Women's A and B) each with their own race and then having a P/1/2/3, 4/5 men's and women's races at the end of the day. The atmosphere would be completely different!

A big announcement...

After 6 years as Conference Director and a few years as unofficial director, I decided a few weeks ago that it was time to step down and let someone else have the fun of being CD.  The National Collegiate Cycling Manager, Jeffrey Hansen, has appointed the Assistant CD, Joey Iuliano, to become the full-time Conference Director.  Many of you are familiar with Joey as he has implemented the conference meeting and the facebook page, among other Initiatives.  He will also be the SW's first CD who will be racing collegiately at the same time (which occurs in other conferences frequently).

I will be working with Joey through the end of the mtb season, transitioning the responsibilities. He will be attending the mtb events also in the fall.   So please feel free to start contacting him about conference activities and concerns.

With the current teams' growth and good leadership, as well as the new teams that are coming into the SW this fall, I am very confident that the SW is in great hands.  Thank you all so much for making my job pretty fun.

Thanks go to Joey for pitching in a lot when I was away for work, and to all the riders for another great road season!

Updated corrected points

All -

The updated Adoption Exchange Men's A crit results & the associated points have been updated (thanks Constantin!).

The last race of the season - the SWCCC Championship Criterium - is this weekend!  Double points, plus the last chance for those of you As to get your last required race in if you want to meet the eligibility requirements for Nationals.

Joey will have the trophies and the medals (I will be out of town for work), and I will be able to authorize National riders to be able to register as soon as I get a copy of the results.

Have a great race this weekend!

Preliminary MTB schedule

has been posted on the calendar page.  Obviously, this is tentative, but as all the NM races have (generously) included collegiate categories, I have included them on the page for planning purposes.  Please let us know if you have any additions/changes, thanks!

Lots of things this post

Thanks to all who came out to the Adoption Exchange races this past weekend!  And a big thanks to Silvio Mendes to including them again this year.  Also it was great seeing a few UNM and NMSU riders out there!

I have posted a link to the overall results on the calendar page, as well as a separate page for the collegiate-only results.

It looks as if there were a few snafus ... for the crit (men's A's), only the collegiate winner was scored.  I know that the rest of you started, but were pulled by the officials.  Unfortunately, they did not give you a place.  So in the interest of calculating points, everyone else was scored as being in second place and received the same number of points (64).  The winner received 70 points.  If one or more of you remember which order you were pulled, please let me know and I will correct the results/points.  I have some recollection of the order, but I am not sure.

Also, for the women's A road race results, Stefanie was not scored (how rude!).  I know that she and Sarah went by at the finish, but I do not know who finished first.  So if you could let me know that, I would appreciate it.

The points are up, based on the incomplete (incorrect?) results.

To date, the A riders who have qualified for Nationals (3 or more races as an A for mass start events at Natls) are:

Men:  Joey Iuliano, Jake McLaughlin, Spencer Crites, David Carlson
Women: Reiley Pankrtaz, Stefanie Sichler

The following need one more race:  Nathan Franklin, Constantin Schreiber, Max Rich, Andrew Keller, Allison Alterman, Shelby Hoglund, Sarah Muench

Please remember, this is only to establish your eligibility, but right now it looks as if everyone who meets the eligibility requirements will be able to attend, based on the SW conference allocations.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Joey Iuliano has established a FB page for the conference:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/swccc/

Also, he hosted our first ever face to face conference meeting in ABQ after Saturday's races.  I have not posted the link to the brief minutes on this page yet, but Joey has posted them on FB

And for his experience in collegiate cycling at Purdue and Arizona, as well as his leadership within the conference, he has been named as Assistant Conference Director by USA Cycling.  Congrats Joey!  We will be dividing some of the responsibilities for the conference in the near future.

One last thing (really!) - in addition to this page and FB, we are also going to try to communicate using Google Groups.  We have been told that some riders, advisers, etc. do not check this page very often and/or do not use FB, so we need to also get the message out in another format.  So please join Google Groups for the conference at your earliest convenience.

Thanks for reading!

New points are up....

Next race weekend up will be the Adoption Exchange races in NM on April 6th & 7th - hope to see you all there!

Racing this weekend!

Races this weekend will be in Phoenix (Sunday) at the South Mountain Classic, and in the Las Cruces area for the Trifecta omnium!  It sounds like there will be a good turnout at both events - race hard and have fun!

Congrats to BMX National Champion

Dominique Daniels of Grand Canyon University for her second consecutive Collegiate D2 National Championship in BMX!

You can read the story here:  http://www.usacycling.org/daniels-and-posey-earn-bmx-national-titles-in-phoenix.htm

ASU's Blake Foxx finished 9th in the Men's D1 National Championship event.

Great job to both of these athletes!

Points are finally up!

And there is a 7 point difference in the team omnium!

The registration link to the South Mountain race is also available on the calendar page.  Please watch the deadlines for registration at upcoming events, as some events do not allow race day registration.

ASU race completed

Another good turnout this weekend at ASU - and no rain!  Thanks to all who participated and to ASU and Strada Racing for co-promoting.  Results are up; points will be up shortly - I am waiting on the film results for the primes.

A big welcome

To the newest club in the conference, the Santa Fe Community College Cycling Club! Hopefully we will be seeing them at the races in the near future!

Thursday, February 7, 2013

Points are up!

The first point totals of the season are up on the points page.

I was supposed to get a bunch of photos from the race from Mason Ibas, but I haven't seen them yet.

New for this year, we are also tracking the B/C team points separately to encourage a B/C team competition!  The B/C omnium winning team will also receive a trophy at the end of the season.

The A omnium leaders (Joey from UA and Stefanie from ASU) will be wearing the omnium leaders' jerseys at the ASU Criterium this weekend.

Speaking of which, have you all registered for the ASU race??

UA Criterium & Flapjack TT

Thanks to all the racers and support staff that came out this weekend!  The points should be up shortly.

Some news...

The January NAU/Bike Haus criterium that was cancelled will not be rescheduled due to a conflict with the host venue.

The Adoption Exchange flyer is available.

The South Mountain flyer will be available soon.

The Hillsboro road race will again be the SW championship road race (2x points)

And yes, it has been pointed out that the South Mountain race and the Trifecta Omnium are the same weekend.  This was an extreme scheduling snafu and I and the promoters apologize for it.  So you have two choices that weekend.  I have heard that some teams may split their squads between the two locations which is great if it is feasible, as it is supporting both promoters.

Please let me know if you have any questions/issues, etc.

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

UA Criterium & Flapjack TT

are this weekend!  Hope to see you all there for the (revised new) first races of the season!

Bike Haus/NAU crit cancelled

All -

The race has been cancelled, apparently. (I am sitting here in Phoenix talking to a bunch of unhappy riders who didn't know either).

Bike Haus/NAU crit update - time change!

This is from the promoter of the Bike Haus/NAU criterium on January 26th....

Due to unexpected circumstances with the venue, Bike Haus Criterium (Sat. 01/26) was forced to change its schedule to a twilight event starting at 5 PM. Lighting will be very bright and safe all along the course.

To avoid running too late, several categories have been combined and the Women Master 35+ and Men Cat. 4/5 races have been cancelled. LRO will contact all riders who are pre-registered for this event and offer either a change of category or complete refund upon request. Access LRO website to find the updated schedule. The organizer apologizes for any inconvenience. Please inform all your club members about this change.

I have linked to the new flyer on the Calendar page.
