UA Crit is on January 21st

Yes, the UA Crit is January 21st! The link is on the race page.

I hope to see all of you there! For those of you who have attended in past years, please note that this year the Collegiate C Men will be having their own race to prevent the large mixed-class fields that created a little (!) confusion in the past.

Dig out of the snow and find the bikes and hope to see you in Tucson!

It will be in the low 70's this weekend...hopefully the weather will be similar on race day. :-)

Licenses and races - VERY IMPORTANT

Hello all -

I just wanted to re-iterate something that I have been saying (and that should be self-evident!) for a number of years.

Your racing collegiate license MUST match the category in which you are racing.

Seems logical, no? But pretty much every race we get people who register for the wrong category, whether or not it is intentional. Then after the race, they go to the officials or the promoter or the registration people or myself and complain that they are in the incorrect category and that the results need to be changed.

Knowing what category you are, and what race you need to be in, is the responsibility of the rider. For beginners, it may be up to the coach and/or teammates to help guide them to the correct category, help them through registration, and to help them get to the start line (remember when you all were beginners? We were all confused at some point!)

So this is the way it is going to work (again!) in 2012: your license category must match your race category.

There will be no whining to officials/promoters/registration, etc. about this, either before, during, or after a race. With most officials, promoters, and registration people being able to access the USAC database either before or after the race, they have the ability to check the database to make sure that you are registering for the correct category. If you had requested (and I have approved) a category change between the time you register and the time you show up to race, you need to print out an "authorization to ride" form from your USAC account, which will show your correct (new) race category.

To provide a further incentive to do this correctly, all race results will be double-checked by me in the week following the race, and corrections will be made. For example - if I find that someone scored in the A race, but his/her license says they are a C rider, then they will lose all individual and team points and their placings for that race (and everyone else will move up a spot).

So where does this leave all of the riders? Request upgrades (if necessary) from your USAC account before the race, including all relevant race resume information.

Men should be starting at Cat C, not Cat D. Women should be starting at Cat B.

I'm sorry if this seems harsh, but we need to straighten this out. It will benefit you all as racers to make sure that you are racing against people in your own category. It will also prevent riders who may think that they are better than they are from potentially being a safety risk to themselves and others if they "self-select" their own category. Plus, it is in the rules...we wouldn't see a Cat 3 racing with the Pro/1/2 men in "regular" USAC racing.

Thanks for reading.

PS This was not directed at any one individual and/or team...I have seen it across the board in the last few years.

Nancy

Stop the Presses! UA Crit may be Jan 21st & link

Hello all -

Yes, I know it is confusing. Right now the UA Crit may be back on for January 21st. This is due to the fact that the competing event on the UA campus got relocated/moved from the January 21st date. The Tucson streetcar project is expected to be tearing up a good majority of the course in April, pretty much rendering it unusable.

Stay tuned for the final word ASAP!

The link to the Bike Haus/NAU criterium on January 28th is now active, please see the clendar page, thanks.

Date change for the UA crit & CX Natls

Hello all -

Due to circumstances beyond the UA's control, there has been a date change for the UA Criterium. Instead of January 21st, it is now April 14th. We are discussing the possibility of making it an omnium with the Colossal Cave Road Race the next day, but right now, that is just a possibility.

The NAU/Bike Haus race in Phoenix is now tentatively scheduled for January 28th.

For those of you wanting to go to CX Nationals, online registration has been available but it is closing soon. Please let me know if you plan on attending, thanks.

CX races and 2012 Road Season

Hello all -

Hopefully you are staying warm and dry. We've had nasty weather here lately.

While we haven't had a cyclocross season, we have had some riders participating in the NM CX races. There is one more event in Albuquerque this weekend. NMSU is co-hosting a CX race with Zia Velo in Las Cruces on December 3rd. All of the links are on the calendar page. Thank you to all of the riders who have shown continued interest in CX!

For those riders wanting to go to CX Nationals in Madison Wisconsin in January, please let me know. You have to be an A to be eligible to compete there.

The AZ and NM clubs have been submitting their 2012 race dates to their local planning planning organizations and to USAC. The tentative 2012 calendar is on the calendar page. Thanks so much to all the clubs for their dedication to promoting collegiate races.

MTB National Championships

Congrats to all who attended the MTB championships in Angel Fire this weekend! Both UNM and NAU sent racers out to compete in the cold and mud (lots and lots of mud!) Thanks to all for your hard work and efforts this season. A big thanks also goes to host school UNM for all of their efforts behind the scenes. And to UNM alum and National Champ Nina Baum who gave a great talk at the awards dinner.

Thanks again and now... it's cyclocross season!

Congrats to the MTB Champions!

Congrats to all the Omnium champions from the Dust Devil race last weekend! It was a great turnout! The results are here. Congrats to team omnium wnrs NAU and NMSU, and all the individual omnium winners. The photos are up also. The points are also here. Sorry for the weird post, but my computer is doing weird things tonight.

Hope to see you all at Nationals!

SW MTB Championships this weekend & CX

Hello all -

The updated points and HDS results are up on the points and Calendar pages respectively.

For the MTB race this weekend, there has been a little confusion... the collegiate women race in the morning in the "Wahine Warrior" event (with all other women) and the collegiate men race in the afternoon in the "Dust Devil" event (with all the other men). That way the men & women are not on the course at the same time, and it is supposed to encourage more spectators. If you have any questions, please contact the promoter directly.

Also, we have interest in NM from both UNM and NMSU for holding at least on collegiate CX event apiece. Are there any interested schools in AZ that would like to host a CX race so we can have a more extended CX season? The Collegiate CX Natls will be in January 2012.

Let me know & see you this weekend! Thanks.

Conference Points are up!

On the points page. The results are on the Race Schedule page after each race. Please let me know if you have any questions/concerns.

Have fun in Gallup this weekend - sorry, I have to work so I won't be there!

HTH 2011

Thanks all for attending HTH yesterday. A mix of veterans and some new faces, with representation by NMSU, UNM, NAU and UA. Results will be up as soon as I get a copy. I am waiting on the points from the BTS race; apparently there were some questions on what was awarded at the race versus what was posted online. As soon as I get those ironed out (hopefully today) I will get the updated points up ASAP so you can peruse them before the Gallup race next weekend. Photos are up from yesterday.

Back to School Special

It was great seeing NAU and UNM at the race on Saturday - there was a great turnout of collegiate riders. Thanks to Brent and the rest of the UNM riders for putting on a great event. Points will be up as soon as I receive a copy of the results. I have uploaded the photos and will post a link to them tomorrow once I can ID a few more riders They came out pretty dark due to the rain & forest darkness. Oh well! Thanks again!

Flyer info and other items

Hello all -

Just a few quick items.

I have posted the flyer links that I have received on the Calendar page. Please pay particular attention to the pre-registration deadlines, as there are some races that do not do race day registration.

Please please please send me your upgrade or category change requests as soon as you can. Since we only have A, Bs & Cs in this conference, if your license says D, please request an upgrade to Cs through your USAC account. This saves time and confusion for the promoters and their registration people.

We do not have any DH races in the conference this semester, mainly due to restrictions by land managers. So those gravity-minded individuals who wish to attend Natls are going to have to submit a race resume to me, with their category A-type (pro/expert) race results for the last 12 months ONLY.

Please carefully read over the MTB Natls requirements for the conference. Yes, I realize that it may require a significant amount of travel. Because of the way races fell this year, most of the mtb races are in NM. This is not always the case, as it varies from year to year, (a few years ago the races were mostly in AZ), so it balances out in the end over time. Those of you who have promoted a race know how difficult it can be to find suitable safe courses that property owners will allow racers to use year after year. Fire restrictions can also be a factor, for both MTB as well as road races.

You all may have seen the press release from USAC about the Road Natl Championships being held in Utah for the next two years, so finally SW and W area schools can save a bit on travel $, both for MTB and Road Natl Championships.

Please let me know if you have any questions or issues. If not, I'll see you next weekend!

Ramping up the mtb season

Hello all & welcome back -

I think by now everyone should be back at school (or close to it) and ready for the start of the mtb season. I haven't received any flyers or links yet but I assume they are coming soon.

As a reminder, please check the calendar section for info on upcoming races. The first one will be September 10th in the Albuquerque area, followed by Las Cruces and then Gallup races. Thanks to UNM & NMSU for stepping up and hosting/co-hosting these races.

The promoter of the Dust Devil race (the last race on the calendar) has graciously decided to allow all 3 AZ schools to co-host the race, since there is only one AZ race this fall. Thank you David Benjes. The race day schedule for this race has changed slightly from in previous years.

I just got back from the Conference Director's Summit in Colorado Springs this past weekend, and came back with a bunch of ideas and other info.

I am trying to get all the info (photos and points) from the old site moved over here but it is slow going. Why did we make the change? USAC wanted the conferences to have a more consistent look, and they wanted to go to one type of hosting service (or that's how I understand it anyways). There's things that I like about it and things that I don't like, but at least now I am not paying for it out of my own pocket.

Let me know your thoughts, opinions, questions, etc.

Thanks!

New web page & change in schedule

August 3, 2011: Thanks to Evan Cooper of USAC for all his work in creating these new pages and moving all of the old content over from the old SWCCC page!

The October 1st race (Road Apple Rally) will no longer have a collegiate category, so I am taking it off the schedule.

Thanks to the teams who stepped up and expressed interest in helping to promote the Dust Devil race in October. Keep watching for an official announcement.

Sunday, June 12, 2011

UNM will be the host school for Collegiate MTB Nationals in October at Angel Fire, NM!

UNM is looking for additional help at the event - if your team is interested, please contact Brent at UNM, bgill505 (at) gmail.com  Thanks!

Also, our fall calendar is taking shape - please check out the race schedule!

June 2011: For those who haven't seen it, the MTB National Championships will again be held at Angel Fire, NM. See partial article pasted below. It is really exciting that it will be in the SW Conference again!

Also, the legal types at USAC has determined that non-office personnel can no longer have @usacycling.org email addresses. So my new conference email is SWcollegiatecycling.org@gmail.com; this will automatically be forwarded to my "regular" gmail address, which is what most of you use anyways!

Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals move to New Mexico’s Angel Fire Resort this fall

Friday, June 3, 2011

Colorado Springs, Colo. (June 3, 2011) – USA Cycling is pleased to announce a two-year agreement with New Mexico’s Angel Fire Resort to host the 2011 and 2012 Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships.

After unanticipated difficulties forced the original venue to step down as the event’s host this spring, Angel Fire agreed to step in and offer up its world-class bike park for the three days of national championship racing.

Both the 2011 and 2012 events will be held on their originally scheduled weekends of October 28-30, 2011 and October 26-28, 2012.

Sunday, May 8, 2011

Congrats to all the Road Nationals attendees

UA - David Glick, Kyle Colavito, Matthew Jones, Robert Chorost, Melanie Colavito, Judy Jenkins & Erin Lauterbach

NAU - Brandon Davidson

UNM - Mitch Maestas

Awesome job everyone!!!!!

Results are up for the Terra Del Sol RR, the Lobo Classic/SWCCC Championship Criterium, and the Adoption Exchange Classic RR and TT (the crit was cancelled).

Thanks to UNM for making all these Albuquerque-area races happen and for all those who showed up to race! Results are on the Results page.

A quick note... there was a question as to whether omnium placings would count for collegiate points.  After a consultation with USAC, it was determined that they will not count.  The "extra points" (from the omnium placings) would provide an "unfair advantage" to those races that also had omnium awards...therefore, everyone would attend those races, and not just the single day races.  Sorry!  Of course the individual stages will still count for points.

We have tentatively added one more race to the schedule - the Superior RR, held in Superior, AZ on Saturday, April 16th.  They are still negotiating the course with ADOT, so the flyer is not available yet.  Watch this space for more details. Superior was the SWCCC Road Race Championship for years...it's not an easy course!

Final allocations for Nationals, as well as the final team omnium standings will be completed after Superior.  For those of you trying to register for Natls already based on what you think are the current/final standings, you will probably find that you cannot register.  That is because I need to authorize you to register (it's a separate conference director database); since I can't authorize you until after Superior, you will not be able to register until then.  Please note:  if Superior does not happen, I will announce the allocations and omnium winners and authorize riders as soon as possible.

Thanks to all who attended the TriFecta Omnium in Las Cruces/Hillsboro this weekend, and especially to Zia Velo/David Rutledge/NMSU for promoting and volunteering!

At least this year it was sunny and warm (I could have done without the wind on Saturday though!).  It was great seeing the NMSU racers for the first time this season also!

Updated points are posted, and results are posted (but not the omnium results - haven't seen those yet).

A few housekeeping matters that I have noticed since the beginning of the season:

1.  Your racing license is REQUIRED to match the category you are racing!  This is STILL a problem after 6 races - c'mon people, it's not that hard to request a change in your category.  You will not be allowed to start another SWCCC race unless your license matches the category you are racing.

2.  Riders can't "bounce" around between categories.  You can't decide on your own that you are a C, then start with the A's the following race, then maybe race in the Bs later on.  If you need to upgrade (or downgrade) please work with me to get it accomplished (thanks to all who have done it correctly!).  This saves time and confusion for promoters, officials, me, and your fellow racers who don't know which category you are racing in this week.  If you are not sure or have questions, please let me know.

3.  The promoters so far have made an effort to provide prizes for the collegiate riders in most races - whether it is for primes, or overall prizes.  They do not have to do this at all.  I understand that everyone wants to get on the road after the races, but letting the promoter know that you are not sticking around to pick up prizes is a nice courtesy.  Yesterday, we waited for many of the collegiate riders to pick up their merchandise prizes ... and waited... and many did not show up (thanks to those who did!)

And as we move into this weekend at Las Cruces/Hillsboro and the SW Championship RR, special thanksto Zia Velo and NMSU for hosting the races!

Just a quick note... the Tierra del Sol RR is up in the air as to whether it will happen or not. Please stay tuned.

After much going back and forth and rider comments, the revised UA crit results are posted. Mainly this has affected the Men C field. We have spent a lot of time going over the officials' notes and reading the film for the primes...thank you all for your patience.

The updated individual points are also up.

Just one more item...apparently my cell phone has been cutting in and out, and I have a delay of 1-2 days on my phone messages (if I can hear them at all). So please try to use my email for "regular" messages. I can take a text msg if it is urgent (during non-work hours) but I do not have a texting plan, so it costs me per message. Thanks. I am trying to get this fixed!

Here is how it stands for both team Nationals Qualification, as well as for overall Team Omnium. Hopefully we will be seeing some of the D2 schools riders in the coming weeks!

Another awesome turnout at UA this weekend...

51 total riders! Results posted on the Results page.  Please please let me know about any corrections/issues ASAP.  It's getting to the point where (probably next season) we will need separate race times for at least the Men Cs, which means our conference is growing, which is great!  Points will be up as soon as I receive the video files from the camera official for the prime points - I'll probably get them tomorrow (Wednesday) and points will be up shortly after that.  Photos will be up as soon as I receive them from the photographer also.

Just received ASU results - on Results page.

Also received the flyer and information link for the SW Criterium Championships in NM on March 27th.  Link to registration:  http://www.newmexicosportsonline.com/events/details.aspx?id=234

Please also remember that there is no race day registration for the NMSU omnium (which includes a TT, Crit & the SW Championship RR) - this is the next SW race.  Please check registration deadlines on the Race Schedule page.

Thanks to all who attended the ASU Criterium last weekend!

Results will be posted as soon as I receive them (and then I will do points...)

The UA Criterium is tomorrow; info on the Race Schedule Page. Hope to see everyone there!

A lot of items here for all.

Results are up on the results page!  (I'm working on the points)

Photos are on the photo page...please bear in mind this was me with my camera and not the professionals that they had on the course.

For those asking about qualifications for road nationals, they are on the Nationals Qualification page.  Please read them carefully.

The feds finally got the upgrade issue resolved this morning; I am sorry for the delay.  Everyone who requested an upgrade since Friday should have received notification by now.  (Now the feds have apparently deleted my racing and officials license, so they are working on trying to fix that, sigh).

The feds want all conference emails on conference Google groups, so please look for that change soon.

Reminder to all teams:  all team members must race with either a team jersey or a blank (plain) jersey.  No trade team jerseys are allowed - there were a few out there on Sunday.  You will not be able to start other races this season with a trade team jersey.  This is in the rulebook.  Thank you for reading!

Thanks to all for an awesome turnout at the Bike Haus crit yesterday! We had 35 riders in all categories, with UA, ASU, NAU, and Harvard represented!

I have not (as of 2:20 pm) not received the final results file from the officials yet.  As soon as I do, I will post it and the points.

Just an FYI... any of you who have requested an upgrade since Friday... I am NOT ignoring you.  Apparently the computer at USAC had an issue this weekend, and all upgrade requests across the country have been sent to Jeffrey Hansen by mistake.  He is going to forward them to the correct conference directors, but it may take a few days.  Sorry!

News Updates

A collegiate race has been added to the criterium presented by Bicycle Haus racing at Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix on February 6th.  Info here:  http://www.larouedor.com/20110206-az-bhcrit.html

The rest of the schedule as I know it is up on the Race Schedule page, with links to flyers if I have received them.

And for those of you who read the collegiate rulebook, yes, the 2011 rulebook is not online yet.

Monday, January 3, 2011

Hope you all had a relaxing break!

A few items:
The UA Criterium had to move to Saturday, February 26th, due to circumstances beyond their control (ie men's basketball game being televised...how rude!)

The Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championship will be October 28-30 at the Timberline Resort in Davis, WV. The National Track Championship will be held in Indianapolis by Marian College. The CX National Championships will be held in January 2012.

Please please renew your club's memberships with USA Cycling as soon as possible. I know that you are all pretty busy, but if you do it now, it will be a lot less hassle than if you do it right before the first race of the season.

Also, please renew your individual collegiate licenses when you get a chance!

The new collegiate rulebook for 2011 should be available shortly! There will be new rules that significantly affect Nationals eligibility (both school and individual) as well as a new scoring system (to make it reasonably similar across the country.
